What are the national holidays this 2023?

All Spain contemplates in the 2023 working calendar a total of 9 national holidays, that is, one more than in 2022. It is important that you know them so that they do not affect in any way the production of your business or have to cancel any appointment for the provision of your services.

In that sense, the 9 national holidays that the Spain 2023 working calendar will have are the following:

  • Friday, January 6: Epiphany of the Lord.
  • Friday, April 7: Good Friday.
  • Monday, May 1st: Labor Day.
  • Tuesday, August 15: Assumption of the Virgin.
  • Thursday, October 12: Spanish National Holiday.
  • Wednesday, November 1st: All Saints’ Day.
  • Wednesday, December 6: Day of the Spanish Constitution.
  • Friday, December 8: Immaculate Conception Day.
  • Monday, December 25: Christmas.

What displaced holidays will there be this 2023?

We understand as displaced days of the Spain 2023 working calendar the holidays that the autonomous communities can move to another date. That is, they can be moved to be taken on other dates for reasons of tradition.

A very usual case of displacement days is April 6, better known as Good Friday. This will be a public holiday throughout Spain, except in the Valencian Community and Catalonia.

Also, there is the possibility of substituting in the 2023 Spanish work calendar the rest on the Monday following the national holidays. These coincide on Sunday, due to the incorporation of other holidays that are traditional.

Other options that are also substitutable in Spain’s 2023 work calendar are the celebration of St. Joseph’s Day on March 19 and St. James the Apostle on July 25 in their respective territories.

With this in mind, the following dates are being celebrated this year:

  • January 2, Monday following New Year’s Day: Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León and Murcia.
  • January 6, Epiphany of the Lord: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Valencia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarre, Basque Country, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.
  • April 6, Maundy Thursday: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Catalonia, Valencian Community, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarre, Basque Country, La Rioja, Ceuta and Melilla.
  • July 25, St. James the Apostle: Castile and Leon, Galicia, Navarre and the Basque Country.

When will the regional festivities take place?

In addition to the holidays mentioned in the Spain 2023 work calendar, there are holidays that only belong to a specific autonomous community, among which the following dates stand out: 

  • Andalusia: February 28, Day of Andalusia.
  • Aragón: April 24, Monday following St. George’s Day, Day of Aragón.
  • Asturias: September 8, Asturias Day.
  • Balearic Islands: March 1, Balearic Day and April 10, Easter Monday.
  • Canary Islands: May 30, Canary Islands Day.
  • Cantabria: July 28, Day of the Institutions of Cantabria and September 15, La Bien Aparecida.
  • Castilla-La Mancha: May 31, Castilla-La Mancha Day and June 8, Corpus Christi.
  • Catalonia: April 10 (Easter Monday), June 24 (St. John’s Day), September 11 (National Day of Catalonia) and December 26 (St. Stephen’s Day).
  • Valencian Community: April 10 (Easter Monday), June 24 (San Juan) and October 9 (Day of the Valencian Community).
  • Extremadura: February 21, Carnival and September 8, Extremadura Day.
  • Galicia: May 17, Day of the Galician Letters.
  • Community of Madrid: May 2, Madrid Community Holiday.
  • Region of Murcia: June 9, Day of the Region of Murcia.
  • Navarre: April 10, Easter Monday.
  • Basque Country: April 10, Easter Monday.
  • La Rioja: April 10, Easter Monday and June 9, Day of La Rioja.
  • Ceuta: June 29 (Feast of the Eidul Adha Sacrifice), August 5 (Our Lady of Africa) and September 2 (Ceuta Day).
  • Melilla: April 21 (Feast of Eid Fitr) and June 29 (Feast of the Sacrifice-Aid Adha).

Which holidays are bridging this 2023?

The so-called bridges are formed when the celebrations fall on Mondays or Fridays and, being close to the weekend, allow workers to enjoy more days off.

In this Spain 2023 work calendar, the first long weekend was January 6, which fell on a Friday; April 7, which is Good Friday; Monday, May 1; and December 25, which will also be a Monday. 

Additionally, December 6th falls on Wednesday and December 8th on Friday. If you as a worker can take Thursday, December 7 off, you will be able to enjoy a total of 5 days off.

When it comes to workers who want to take a good break, they can extend their days off for the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin. This falls on Tuesday, August 15 and the feast of Columbus Day, which is celebrated on Thursday, October 12.

Finally, the Spain 2023 work calendar, in the cases of the communities that have chosen to celebrate Holy Thursday on April 6, will have a long-awaited 4-day long weekend to rest.
