Spain leads renewable energy production in Europe

Renewable energy

Did you know that Spain currently leads renewable energy production in Europe? With its favorable climate and a strong commitment to clean sources, the country has become a benchmark. Do you have a business idea based on this industry and want to know how you can make it grow thanks to this advantage? Stay to the end and discover the details of this ecological and energetic revolution.

The outlook for clean energy production in Spain

Not long ago, coal was used in Spain as a source of energy for electricity generation. However, at present, renewable energy or clean energies account for most of the electricity generated. It can regularly reach between 70% and 80%, even reaching peaks of close to 100% on some occasions.

Renewable energy production is at its best worldwide. Projects of this type in Spain stand out as some of those that have made significant progress towards sustainable energy production in Europe.

According to Red Eléctrica, 2023 will be a key year for the ecological transition in Spain. Their estimates indicate that renewable energy could represent 50% of annual electricity generation. If we focus specifically on wind and solar energy, this figure could reach 42%.

These figures will continue to increase year after year. As new clean energy generation facilities are built both onshore and offshore.

If we step back and reflect, the year 2022 was exceptional in terms of global clean energy production. This achievement was evident both in Europe and in Spain in particular.

In terms of installed renewable energy capacity, Spain is in second place, surpassed only by Germany. If we refer specifically to the installed capacity of wind energy, Spain is also in second place. In terms of active capacity, Spain is in third place, behind Germany and the Netherlands.

Progress towards greater global sustainability

Governments, companies and citizens around the world are working together to drive actions that promote sustainability in all areas of society. Especially with the production of renewable energy.

In 2022, wind and solar power accounted for 12% of total global power generation.

Although it may seem a modest figure, this percentage represents a great advance if we consider that in 2021 it was 10%. These data are based on information from 78 countries, representing 92% of the world’s electricity demand. Renewable energy production is definitely growing in our region.

It is clear that there is still a long way to go to achieve a sustainable future. Especially in those countries that still rely heavily on coal, oil or natural gas. Nevertheless, clean energy production continues to make progress.

Global solar energy growth reached 24%, remaining stable over the last 18 years. For its part, wind energy experienced an increase of 17% in 2022. In addition, there is more encouraging data on renewable energy production:

  • More than 60 countries already generate more than 10% of their electricity from wind and solar sources.
  • If nuclear energy is added to renewable sources, the total percentage of electricity generation worldwide amounts to 39%.

Nuclear energy is positioned as a powerful ally in the production of renewable energy. It will play an important role in backing up clean sources when a stable supply of electricity is required, regardless of climatic variations.

What is the purpose of renewable energy production?

Sustainable development reconciles economic production, natural resources and the well-being of society. But how can it be achieved? By following the United Nations Paris Agreement, which sets out measures and targets to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change. As such, this agreement sets out three fundamental strategies:

  1. Maintain the global average temperature increase below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. In addition, work to limit this increase to 1.5°C in order to significantly reduce the risks and effects of climate change.
  2. Improve the adaptive capacity of infrastructure in the face of the possible adverse effects of climate change. This without increasing emissions and without compromising food production. Renewable energy production plays a key role in this objective.
  3. Encourage the emergence of new business opportunities compatible with a more sustainable and low-emission development.

Europe’s sustainable leadership: driving a responsible and resilient future

Europe has established itself as a benchmark for sustainable leadership. It has adopted bold measures to promote economically, socially and environmentally responsible development.

European countries have succeeded in establishing a solid foundation for addressing global challenges related to climate change. As well as protecting the environment and promoting social equity. Some data supporting this information are:
